books i’ve read lately/i may or may not be obsessed with psychological thrillers

alright everyone, i’m by no means a literary expert. i’m not part of any book clubs, nor am i subscribed to the book of the month. however, i’ve always loved reading, and as the title suggests, i’m obsessed with fiction/thriller/fantasy books. like i’m an OG harry potter and twilight fan. hopefully y’all didn’t click out of this at the mention of twilight. i’m also obsessed with reading reviews on good reads, which is what i always consult prior to reading any book. i can’t get enough of murder mystery/someone got kidnapped/crime solving/criminal minds/law and order SVU type books. it also happens to be my fav TV show genre so there’s a theme here i guess. below are some books i’ve read within the last several months that i’d recommend. this post isn’t meant to give any huge spoiler alerts, more so just quick thoughts on how i felt about the book after finishing. so without further a do, let’s get into it!

did i mention i’m also not a professional photographer????

if you’re into books about kidnapping, two girls down is a good one. it’s about a mom who is exhausted af with life and parenting and leaves her two daughters in the car while she “quickly” runs an errand. next thing she knows, her daughters are gone. and like a good crime story line, there’s a huge plot twist and the kidnapper is someone you wouldn’t have suspected. i was super into this book because, as you’ll see a theme with all of these books, I NEEDED TO KNOW WHO DUNNIT.

along those kidnapping lines, the couple next door is also a good ole kidnapping story. it’s about a married couple having hella problems in their marriage who have dinner at their friend’s place next door so they leave their baby at home and bring the baby monitor and check on her every 30 minutes. and by the end of the night – you guessed it – their baby goes missing. i legit could not put this book down, y’all. it was a real page turner. i should also add that you end up hating like every single person in the book by the end, just fyi.

party girls die in pearls was a unique experience for me. it takes place at oxford so the language and slang that the author used was refreshing. it’s a story about a girl who starts at oxford university, has a hard time making friends because duh, and literally finds a dead body like the second day she’s there. this one took a hot minute to really get in to, but once you get passed that and get to the part where she discovers aforementioned party girl who died in pearls, you’ll keep going.

if you haven’t heard of a simple favor by now, which was made into a movie with blake lively and anna kendrick and came out in theater in september, idk where you’ve been. i completely intended to watch the movie, so i made it my mission to finish the book before the premiere and avoid any and all trailers so as not to spoil it. i haven’t watched the movie yet, BUT GUYS, this book is something else. another book where you kinda end up hating everyone by the end. if you’ve read gone girl by gillian flynn (keyword: read, not watched!), a simple favor is kinda like that but also more dramatic in some ways and less dramatic in others. if that makes no sense then you’ll just have to read both to see what i mean.

and finally, i’m currently reading the marriage pact. i don’t pick it up as much as i should because i find myself defaulting to scrolling through insta rather than getting the damn book out of my bag. so far this is unlike anything i’ve read. my initial thoughts are that, you guessed it, it’s about some kind of cult. i’ve gotten used to reading books from the female main character’s point of view, and this is actually from the husband’s pov. i was kinda annoyed about that at first because i’m just here for all the female protagonists, but i’m getting over it. mostly because the husband is a therapist, which i can appreciate as a therapist myself lolz.

i’ve read hundreds of other books not mentioned here, ranging from other psychological thrillers (holla at my fav gillian flynn), fantasy/fiction (yes i enjoy more than just harry potter and twilight), and the fifty shades series (don’t judge me). can you believe i just name dropped both fifty shades and twilight in one post? shout out to my bff who will appreciate those references. if you’ve read other books that you think i might like, let me know! and if you’re like me and apparently like the feeling of having a heart attack while reading, hopefully this post has given you some book ideas. brb while i go read more about this marriage cult of sorts.
