book update! ft. female authors who specialize in writing about terrible husbands

happy saturday everyone! this weather has me feeling all types of way. as my dad would say – “weather you like it, or not!” lololol i love a good pun. let’s just get right to business to defeat the huns, shall we? i received some bad news this morning and i’m kind of out of it so forgive me if this post isn’t as jam packed with witty literature as it usually is. i thought i’d give y’all an update on books i’ve read recently. for whatever reason, i haven’t read as much as i usually do, which tends to happen every once in awhile. i go from 0 to 100 – casual reading on a regular basis to all i can think about is the book i’m reading and wanting to read it every second of the day.

idk what to call these types of posts, they’re not exactly book reviews, but more so books i read and my overall impression of them. check out my first one where i introduce my obsession for psychological thrillers and who dunnit?! novels here. to the left are two books i purchased through amazon after checking goodreads as i always do, and below is a book i borrowed from my friend at work, elizabeth, so i apologize that i don’t have an actual photo of it and i just have this ratchet screenshot. note to self: always take a picture of the book before giving it back to my friend.

let’s start with the secrets you keep. this book was a perfect medley of background information and detail, character development, action, and suspense. it’s about a woman who was in a terrible car accident and experiencing severe PTSD, who finds herself having difficulty writing her next book. she’s married to this guy who turns out to be a trash husband. it makes you realize that the husband might be a piece of sh*t, but that don’t mean he’s a murderer, too. the theme with all of the books i’m talking about today is the husband just really f*cking sucks. *insert quote about women ruling the world* #girlpower. i couldn’t put this down because you honestly have no idea who the culprit is until the end, like you think you know, all signs point to the husband, but each chapter keeps you guessing and reformulating your opinion.

before i talk about behind closed doors, i want to talk about the wife, mostly because it’s on the same theme of liar af husbands who just really need to reevaluate their lives. i really enjoyed the secrets you keep, but this book HAD ME SHOOK B*TCH. i would not have thought a book called “the wife” would have been so complex and full of twists and turns. there was also an overarching theme of how sexual assault is addressed, obstacles to women coming forward to report, and the #metoo movement. it was so meaningful and powerful for that reason alone, but it really tied in an amazing story about personal traumas, defining loyalty within family and marriage, and the wild sh*t people will do when they’re heartbroken and/or angry.

and finally, behind closed doors was one of the most f*cked up books i’ve read in awhile. i was literally so anxious reading this book, i was using every single one of my copings skills to get through. don’t get me wrong, this book is also essentially about a husband who turns out to be awful, but he’s like SERIAL KILLER awful, y’all. this was some criminal minds type sh*t. i love criminal minds, but this book didn’t have the comedic relief that matthew gray gubler brings to criminal minds. i was glued to this book in the best and worst way possible. it’s essentially about a woman who falls in love with a man who ends up being evil and almost the whole book is about her trying to outsmart him and escape their marriage. the only reason i kept reading this book is because i just knew there would be a happy ending and i literally refused to believe otherwise.

i’m currently reading a good book that takes place in chicago, so stay tuned! i hope you enjoyed this book update, and of course feel free to send some book recommendations my way! i have a long list of books to read and i’m always looking to add to it. on another note – my email subscription thing was a fail so subscribe if you want but the option is only available if you’re reading my blog on a computer, so maybe i’ll figure that out someday. and with that, i’m off, but not before i get really cheesy for a second and encourage y’all to reach out to your family/friends/loved ones and make sure they know you love them, take care of yourselves emotionally and physically, and do the sh*t you always wanted to do because life is short.
