self-care saturday: treat yo self

HAPPY SATURDAY! i hope y’all are doing wonderful! today i’m going to be trying out a new type of post “self-care saturday” in which i write about a self-care activity (or activites) i did or have been enjoying or what kind of self-care i’ve been working on in general. self-care is one of those terms that is used a lot and is whatever you do that helps you take care of yourself. for some people that’s working out and for others it’s reading a good book. one thing that was really emphasized while i was in grad school is that therapists really need to get that self-care sh*t on lock because of the emotional and mental toll of the job. but in all seriousness, EVERYONE, no matter what job, should be practicing self-care because we all work hard af.

what i learned (through countless moments of misery and adversity lol) is that self-care isn’t as much a bunch of activities, but more so a lifestyle. self-care is what you assign to those activities that you enjoy to emphasize that you’re doing ________ because you deserve it and you want to show yourself that you love yourself and that you’re taking care of yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. so now that you’ve heard my sparknotes version on what i believe self-care involves, let’s talk about how i went HAM on self-care today:

#1 a giant af cup of coffee from one of my fav mugs while watching youtube beauty videos during breakfast – nothing like a self-esteem boost first thing in the morning
#2 a manicure and pedicure at nail fairy (pedicure not pictured obvi) while watching the way way back, an amazing movie with toni collette and sam rockwell
#3 a MUCHHHHH needed haircut and style at salon 1800

i don’t typically get both my nails and hair done on the same day but it just happened to end up that way today and i was like YOLO. check out my post about my nail salon’s version of a no chip manicure without all the fuss! as for my hair, i wish i could get it to look that good on the regz but sadly i can’t which is why i see my stylist sarah at salon 1800 every 2-3 months and let me just tell y’all – she’s a real one. she really listens to you, cares about your hair and your life, and truly knows her sh*t. and finally, i have about 10 different versions of that target mug. i don’t have space for more coffee mugs but because i love coffee and i’m a sucker for a cute af coffee mug i doubt i’ll stop purchasing them anytime soon.

i want to stress that self-care isn’t about material things more than it is about going and doing sh*t for yourself, with the money you’ve worked hard to earn, to show yourself you deserve to have beautiful nails and hair and whatever else it is you spend money on to enjoy. there are times i get caught up thinking that i shouldn’t be spending money on these things but i always remember that my job is about helping and taking care of others so i really need to take care of myself also. part of that is having a relaxing cup of coffee in the morning and going to salons to have someone else take care of me and transform me into someone who loves their hair and nails.

before i go, i’ll leave you with this cute and cheesy quote: you can’t pour from an empty cup, take care of yourself first. i hope you enjoyed this post on my self-care saturday! what do y’all enjoy for some good quality self-care time?! i wanted to mention that i may or may not be going on a hiatus for the next few saturdays because i’m taking a big exam next month and really need to study my a$s off. i love you all! thanks for reading and being part of my frantic life!
